4-star 16th-century award-winning hotel in Burford

Historical Building & Awards

The Bay Tree Hotel is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1565, with oak-panelled public rooms, bare stone walls, and original stone fireplaces including an inglenook fireplace. The hotel won Small Hotel of the Year at the National Enjoy England Excellence Awards 2011 and holds a Gold Award for Excellence from Enjoy England. Wisteria blooms cover the mellow stone walls in season, and the property is steeped in history with wooden beam rafters and woven tapestries.

Rooms & Accommodation

Each room is individually designed with unique decor and charm; examples include the Windrush room with a separate sitting area and the Superior Garden Room with direct garden access. Rooms such as Old Justice offer a bedroom and lounge area akin to a small country cottage, while the Swinbrook room features a super king-size bed and a large bathroom with a walk-in shower. The hotel provides Molton Brown toiletries in bathrooms and Nespresso machines in select rooms for real coffee.

Dining & Bar

The on-site restaurant emphasizes locally sourced ingredients and seasonal menus, serving dishes such as beef cheeks and rack of lamb. The bar resembles a traditional country pub with a cosy atmosphere and offers a selection of wines, real ales, and peroni on tap. Breakfast includes a buffet with cereals, pastries, and fruit, plus cooked options like Eggs Benedict and French toast.

Weddings & Events

The hotel offers exclusive-use wedding options for an intimate and private experience, with the wedding coordinator Laura managing seamless planning and on-day execution. The ceremony room, dining room, and reception area can be set up to host wedding breakfasts and evening celebrations. The property also has extensive meeting and conference facilities with natural daylight, accommodating business events and private gatherings.

Pet-Friendly & Location

The hotel is dog-friendly with allocated rooms for pets, providing pet bowls and baskets, and even a doggy breakfast option. Guests can walk dogs up the high street and around the recreational ground, with a recommended 2.5-hour walk from the hotel. Free parking is available on-site, and the hotel offers easy access from major motorways and is a short walk from Burford's high street with independent shops and galleries.

dim lighting missing shortbread
The dinner service was subpar I found the lighting too dim making the menu difficult to read. My pie came with chunky chips instead of the promised mash no explanation was given. The lemon posset for dessert was powdery and too large a portion it also lacked the advertised shortbread. To top it off the bill included drinks that should have been part of the pie deal

ineffective heating misleading library
the location was acceptable (not much traffic noise).
I had issues with the room temperature. It was too cold. the heating seemed ineffective. additionally, the advertised library offered seating for a maximum of six people. This felt misleading given the small space and limited availability. (honestly, i expected more from a library.)

off-street parking charming receptionist comfortable room
I enjoyed the off-street parking. It was very convenient. The receptionist provided charming service. My room, the Classic Garden Room, was both spacious and comfortable, I admired the street view.
The key was attached to a large piece of wood, I found it cumbersome.
